Veronica Lario, the wife of Silvio Berlusconi, broke her silence yesterday over their divorce to say that her dignity had been “besmirched” by the scandal dogging the Italian Prime Minister.
In a letter of a few sentences published on the front page of Corriere della Sera, she declared that over the past few weeks she had “watched in silence without reacting in the media to the brutal besmirching of myself, my dignity and my marital history”.
Last month Ms Lario ignited a scandal that continues to undermine her husband, saying that she wanted a divorce as she could no longer tolerate the behaviour of the 72-year-old leader, because he “frequents minors” and was “not well”.
The final straw was his appearance in Naples at the 18th birthday party of Noemi Letizia, an aspiring showgirl. Mr Berlusconi has since failed to explain their relationship fully and is under investigation for allegedly using government aircraft to fly her and dozens of showgirls to parties at his villa in Sardinia.
