G8 summit: emergency plan

The scenario, which could prove a logistical nightmare and throw into chaos the plans of delegations from nearly 40 countries who will attend, was brought into sharp focus last week when another strong aftershock struck the city. L’Aquila, where 300 people were killed 60,000 left homeless by an earthquake in April, was chosen as the venue by Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian prime minister, as as a sign of solidarity.
But the gesture is proving a headache for Mr Berlusconi’s officials as they seek to make the the three-day summit, which begins on Wednesday, as smooth-running as possible. “There are alternative plans in case of an emergency but for security reasons we can’t be precise and we can’t enter into the details of the plan,” an Italian government source told The Telegraph yesterday. “The civil protection department has studied all the possible emergency situations that could arise, not just an earthquake. They have the skill and expertise to confront all scenarios. “But L’Aquila is totally safe. We are happy with the venue and have no concerns at all.” The Italian media said that if the summit had to move it would most likely be held in the ministry of foreign affairs in Rome, with national delegations staying in their embassies.
