He hailed it as a personal triumph, borne of his own brand of “great commercial diplomacy.”
However, rather awkwardly for Italy Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, some had a slightly different view of the role he played in this week’s landmark gas deal between Turkey and Russia.
Today, a senior Turkish source said that Mr Berlusconi’s claims of personally orchestrating the energy agreement were exaggerated and came as a surprise to the Turkish government.
Indeed, the source claimed that the deals had already been agreed, when the government received an unexpected last-minute request from Mr Berlusconi to attend the signing ceremony in Ankara with Vladimir Putin, the Russia Prime Minister, and Tayyip Erdogan, his counterpart in Turkey.
