With a gleaming smile, Italian premiere Silvio Berlusconi greeted Colonel Gaddafi and his entourage as they disembarked at Rome's Ciampino airport.
But it was one of the Libyan colonel's honour guards that really caught his eye.

Moments earlier, he had embraced Gaddafi on his first visit to Italy, Libya's former colonial ruler. It is the most open acknowledgement yet that the two nations have put their bitter past behind them.
He landed around an hour late and was accompanied by a 300-strong entourage.
This included the elderly son of a Libyan national hero who was executed by colonial authorities for leading a guerrilla war against the Italians in the 1920s and 1930s.
