Behaving badly on Berlusconi's boat.
Over the weekend we read of Silvio Berlusconi’s marvellous hospitality for Europe’s political leaders.
Then, thumbing through old copies of the Hartlepool Mail, we learnt that another leader has enjoyed his largesse. Stuart Drummond, the Mayor of Hartlepool, admitted “throwing up in Silvio Berlusconi’s toilet”, adding: “Don’t ask.”
We did, immediately. In 2004, on holiday in Antigua, Mr Drummond says, “My mate got friendly with the crew on Berlusconi’s yacht. We got asked for a barbecue. It was all gold-plated inside.” Sadly no dancing girls, nor any sign of the Italian PM.
Mr Drummond thinks “a dodgy burger was what did it”. Equally, it might have been all that gold furnishing.
Has he been a recipient of further “hospitality” since? “Oh no,” he says. “Unfortunately.”
