Sarah Brown and Michelle Obama visit earthquake damage in L’Aquila

It was the day when the wives of the world’s most powerful leaders went from rubble to truffles. Their tour of the earthquake damage in L’Aquila was certain to be a conversation at a banquet last night where they had veal in pastry with truffles. Carla Bruni did not join the wives for the tour of L’Aquila, where 300 were killed and 60,000 are homeless. Michelle Obama was heard asking how many children had died and said she that was worried about the “psychological state” of the children who survived. She shook her head in disbelief as she took in the damage to churches and other treasures. Mrs Obama also met firefighters who are clearing the wreckage. “I and my husband have been very struck by what we’re seeing and we’ll try to do everything possible to support you,” she said.
