Silvio Berlusconi sued by paper that carried prostitute's recordings

Silvio Berlusconi was issued with a writ last night over his attacks on the newspaper group that published a series of damaging recordings made by a prostitute of her alleged encounters with the Italian Prime Minister at his official residence. Mr Berlusconi’s woes mounted when the publishers of La Repubblica, the newspaper that has carried many of the recent revelations about his antics with models and call girls, announced that it was suing him for attacking it as “subversive”. In his first public remarks since the release of lurid tapes made by a call girl, Patrizia D’Addario, during two encounters last year, Mr Berlusconi, 72, said simply: “I am not a saint.” He insisted that he would remain in power and singled out La Repubblica, suggesting that it should take a more relaxed attitude towards his behaviour. His own approach has been much less restrained. He urged an audience of entrepreneurs last month to refrain from advertising in the newspaper, which was attacked again yesterday by Il Giornale, one of the Berlusconi family publications. It said that La Repubblica had spread more poison than Chernobyl.
